Day 1 - UK departure

Day 1 - UK Departure

Depart the UK with international economy flight to Kolkata. We can also arrange departures from your local airport at no extra cost.

 

Day 2 - Kolkata Arrival

Upon your arrival at Kolkata Airport, you will be greeted by our representative and escorted to your hotel for 2 nights stay.

Day 3 - Kolkata

After breakfast, proceed for a city tour of Kolkata. Drive past the colonial heritage buildings of Dalhousie Square and visit Mother Teresa’s House, the Victoria Memorial and St Paul’s Cathedral. Hop on a local tram to the famous Book Market (College Street). Visit the College Street Book Market and enjoy a cup coffee at the historic College Street Coffee Shop, a long-established haven for intellectuals and local literati (on direct payment). Alternatively you may opt to visit the famous Jain temple and Kali temple.

Continue to Kumartuli, the amazing Hindu religious idols market where huge figures of Gods and Goddesses are fabricated from straw and mud.

Day 4 - Kolkata to Darjeeling

This morning, you will be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Bagdogra. Upon arrival at Bagdogra, drive to Darjeeling, often called the ‘Queen of the Hills’, famous for its breathtaking views of snow-capped mountain peaks.

Enjoy an evening at leisure at this picturesque town in the foothills of Eastern Himalayas.

Day 5 - Darjeeling

Early this morning, visit Tiger Hill – situated at an altitude of 2,590 m this spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of sunrise over Mt Kanchenjunga and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains. Even Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, is visible from here on a sunny day. (Exact departure time from hotel depends on time of sunrise and will be advised closer to travel date). On the way back to hotel, visit Ghoom Monastery known as “Yogachoeling Gompa”. It was in the year 1875 that a Mongolian astrologer established the Ghoom Gompa. At the entry of the monastery, there is a huge giant size image of seated ‘Maitreya Buddha’ (prospective Buddha) inside. There are bells, ornate thanka scrolls and drums inside the monastery. Like many other monasteries in and around Darjeeling, this gompa is also a storehouse of some rare Buddhist manuscripts.

Return to hotel for freshen up and breakfast. Later board the Toy Train (subject to availability) for a 30 min fascinating journey to Batasiya Loop, a beautiful view point with manicured gardens from where you can get a wide range view of Darjeeling’s landscape, Mt Kanchenjunga and other Eastern Himalayan peaks.

Later in the morning, visit the Padmaji Naidu Zoological Park, the only zoo in India to breed Tibetan wolf in captivity. It is also the first South Asian zoo to breed Snow Leopard and Siberian Tiger. Rare red pandas are also seen here. Then visit the Tibetan Refugee Self Help centre. Here you see Tibetan men and women making exquisite hand crafted items like woollen carpets, shawls, carved wooden crafts, leather items and more.

Later this afternoon, visit a Tea Estate for a tour of the tea garden and factory  and there’s also an opportunity to buy some of the local produce.

Day 6 - Darjeeling to Pemayangste

After breakfast, embark on a leisurely drive to Pemayangtse in Sikkim, our first stop in the land of the Yeti or abominable snowman.

This afternoon visit the Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the state’s oldest and most important monasteries. The monastery is a three-storey structure, filled with wall paintings and sculptures. On the third floor lies the Zandog Palri, a wooden model of the abode of Guru Rimpoche, complete with rainbows, angels and the whole panoply of Buddha’s and bodhisattvas.

Day 7 - Pemayangste to Gangtok

After breakfast, embark on a leisurely drive to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. This afternoon visit the Enchey monastery with its collection of exquisite images and religious objects.

Day 8 - Gangtok

After breakfast proceed for a city tour of Gangtok which includes a visit to Cottage Industries Institute, showcasing the beautiful Sikkim souvenirs like carpets, hand carved tables and traditional handicrafts. Visit the Research Institute of Tibetology, internationally acclaimed centre of Tibetan Studies & Research houses a vast collection of rare Buddhist books, manuscripts and over 200 Buddhist icons and Do-Drul Chorten, the biggest stupa of Sikkim.

Later, take a short drive to Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre and nearby Rumtek Monastery, the grandest and most colourful monastery of Sikkim. Also enjoy magnificent view of Mt Kanchenjunga, 3rd highest mountain peak in the world.

Day 9 - Gangtok to Kalimpong

After breakfast, embark on a drive to Kalimpong, the beautiful hill station town, which is a meeting point of the ‘three closed lands’ and was once on the trade route between Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan.

This afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of the town, which includes a visit to St. Theresa’s ChurchDeola viewpoint & Lake, and the Kalimpong Bazaar. Kalimpong is noted for traditional handicrafts, woodcarvings, Thankas paintings, metal crafts, Tibetan jewellery, wooden masks etc.

Day 10 - Kalimpong to Kolkata for departure

Today, drive to Bagdogra to catch your return flight to Kolkata. Upon arrival at Kolkata airport, catch your connecting flight to onward destination.

Day 11 - UK Arrival

Arrive back in UK.
